Capstone: Target Types

If you haven’t read my past blog post, What Is Capstone? I really recommend doing so. Some of the things I say in this post may be a little muddy, so I recommend referring back to that one if you would like more insight into what my senior Capstone project, JOL, will be like.

What are Target Types?

Throughout my time at Maryville, we always have focused on the research portion of the design process. It's a crucial step in creating a solid and cohesive system, but instead of creating one individual persona, for capstone, we created 3 target types so we can get a better idea of the kind of person who would stop by.

Type 1: The “First-time-away-from-home”

This s the kind of person who is probably on the younger side and is just moving away from their parents, but more importantly, is moving away from the comfort of a home-cooked meal. They are not well versed in the kitchen and don't want to spend the outlandish prices that the school dining hall offers. They are searching for a place like Jol so they can find comfort in reasonably priced food, while also meeting new people in this new environment.

Foodie / Influencer

This kind of person, also probably on the younger side, cares about the atmosphere of the restaurant and how the food looks. To them, it's almost equally as important as how the food tastes. They just want a good pic to post. They tend to take in the full experience of the restaurant more than an average customer. Though they are young, their reach will help bring a lot of business depending on how they talk about the restaurant. Tending to the needs of this person is very important.

The Home Cook

This is the kind of person who cooks a lot at home but really can't nail that iconic soul food taste without going to and trying it. If it's something you have never had in your life, it's going to be kind of hard to replicate those flavors in your own home. On top of that, there might just be some nights where this group doesn't want to cook, or just doesn't have time to cook. Instead of going for a pizza or a fast food burger, they still want something that resembles a home-cooked meal.
